It seems that in the wake of celebrities’ death, people tend to be affected by the halo effect on them. It’s so easy to see all the good in someone who just left the world. Plus, when they’re good-looking (we’re serious, “lookism” is an actual bias people have towards attractive people!), we tend to think more positively about them.
But just like murderers and sexual predators do not deserve to have their names remembered, neither did these people. People hated the raw, harsh truth that was so different from what the media told us. This whole Reddit thread exposes some of the most shocking facts about some celebrities.
“Frank Sinatra. My grandpa’s girlfriend and her husband used to work for him, and he was a right bastard. Didn’t think that he had to pay people that worked for him, treated employees bad, all the usual human stuff.” – originalsanitizer
“XXXtentacion beat his pregnant wife as well as a gay man while he was in jail.” – noodleteeth
“Charlie Chaplin was pretty much the Harvey Weinstein of the 1930s. His first 2 marriages were with teenage (17 and 16 at the time) actresses from his films that he fucked and got pregnant so he married them in a hurry to save his public image, had a second kid with each (no really raising any), then divorced them a couple of years later. He was in his 30s.
He went on to have relationships with very young actresses all his career. Got in a lot of legal trouble for denying paternity of kids. His last wife was also an 18-year-old actress he met when he was 54. They stayed together and had tons of kids though.” – bhangmango
“Mother Teresa. Her charity brought in millions in donations, but refused health care for people who could have been saved, or could have provided comfort for truly terminal patients. But instead, everyone was deliberately subjected to pain and suffering because it was her belief.” – FinestTreesInDa7Seas
“DMX. My dad was a Yonkers NY cop for 35 years. Arrested X on 4 different occasions in South Yonkers in the mid to late ’90s for running Pit Bull fight rings. My dad HATED him, only because he was so cruel to animals. They had to on a couple of occasions euthanize the dogs on the spot. Many times dogs were found half dead from fights. Or the dogs would attack the cops making the arrests.
My dad always said that it was super odd because, on one hand, you had this guy that was CONSTANTLY caught with cocaine running these rings but on the other hand my dad always said he was VERY nice to cops (Never resisted, very polite, never angry over being caught).” – HortonDrawsAwho
“Johnny Carson. He cheated on his wives and was an all-around prick when he wasn’t on camera. The most widely known example was him telling Joan Rivers that she’d never become the star of The Tonight Show (she was the permanent guest host at the time), then refusing to ever speak to her again after she got a job elsewhere.” – DeathSpiral321
“Coco Chanel revered fashion icon and also Nazi sympathizer.” – armored-jacket
“Pablo Picasso was an abusive raging narcissist who sucked the life out of people around him. His ‘muses’ were generally young women he’d domineer and destroy.” – TedTyro
“Salvador Dali was a fascist that beat women.” – jsimpson069
“Frank Lloyd Wright. He is seen as a visionary in architecture, but he was a horrible person IRL. Raging narcissist, abandoned his wife and kids to run off with the wife of one of his clients, nailed down his selected furniture in a client’s home because he didn’t like what the client wanted, etc.” – bengibbardstoothpain
“Steve Jobs was an as**ole to his family; his own kids hated him, his wife only stayed for the money. He also was known for throwing work colleagues under the bus to cover his own *ss, and taking credit for things he didn’t invent.” – I_smellcrusheddreams
“Paul Walker. I hate saying it because outside of this incident he actually seemed like a good guy. But on two occasions, Paul Walker dated 16-year-old girls. Once when he was 28, and again when he was 32. This was all while he had a young daughter of his own. The age of consent in California is 18, meaning if he did anything sexual with them, he could’ve been charged and indicted on statutory rape. I guess being a predator is ok, though, if you’re really good looking.” – matt_sheiman
“Sean Connery said that women need to be smacked once in a while to keep them in line.” – jimmother
“I’ve worked for Prince, and it’s a not-so-hidden secret he was absolutely awful to work with. He’s a legend for sure but was awful to those who put the show on, and his ego was out of control.” – BottomShelfWhiskey
“Dr. Seuss. Had an affair for years while his wife battled cancer. Drove her to suicide. Married the woman he’d been having an affair with a couple of months later.” – SassySavcy
“Christopher Columbus, truly awful human being, but in school, I was told he was a hero and sh**, all lies.” – jordynbebus8
“Jerry Lewis. He treated his family like sh**, cut his kids out of his will, and was a real POS on set. Watch some clips on YouTube of him and his behavior. Terrible. Most likely stemming from when he and Dean Martin split from being Martin & Lewis, everyone thought Dean would disappear, and Jerry would go on to be a massive star. As it turned out, it was the complete reverse. He was a bitter, bitter person.” – Acquilas
“John Lennon. Guy sang about peace and love and acted like he was a Saint and some holier than thou person. Dude abused his first wife and abandoned his son and had a smug personality, but he was in the Beatles, and to some people, that excuses any wrongdoing.” – vincero19
“Bing Crosby. Father of the Century. Physically and mentally abusive to all his kids, alcoholic, adulterer, slimy businessman.” – Krg26944
“Elvis, he was with Priscilla when she was 15 I think it’s probably safe to assume they were having sex.” – poppypodlatex
